So we have our first batch of birds out in the pens (hens and a single roo in the hen house/laying pen, excess roos stashed in a breeding pen/bachelor pad pending a cull) and have a second batch of 3 day old chicks in the brooder. The first batch is mostly browns, with a couple of Texas A&Ms and a rosetta in the mix. The new batch is 1/3 browns, 2/3 Texas A&Ms. For now we are set, but I am really taken with some of the color variants I have seen, especially the Tibetans and the Rosettas. My understanding is that a Rosetta is a cross between a Tibetan and a white (including A&M), so it seems like if we eventually hatch up some Tibetans we would be able to easily have A&Ms, Browns, Rosettas and A&Ms without much trouble. I know there are a bunch of other color patterns, so before I jump on the Tibetans I thought I would ask opinions on different flavors of coturnix.
What color patterns do you keep? Aside from their color, what positive or negative characteristics do the various types have? Is there much difference aside from color? If you keep multiple colors, do you try to keep the lines pure, let them mix as they will, do something else when you breed them?
We have a main layer house and a separate breeding pen, so pulling birds for the express purpose of getting specific fertilized eggs of a particular breed would not be logistically problematic.
