Hi there! I'm a first-time chicken mom, but we did have peacocks when I was a kid so I have that going for me. In fact, I'm also the first person within our city limits to get chickens! (population 1,200 people so it's a small 'city') We started off two weeks ago with 6 Isa Browns (pullet) from Tractor Supply. Unfortunately, one of them seemed to have an eye infection and just wasn't thriving like the others and ended up passing away. :( The remaining 5 are happy and doing great.
I also decided to start off with one of the coops from Tractor Supply since my husband is overseas and I don't think I can build a coop myself. Within the next few years we plan on building our 'dream coop' so we can get more hens (I really want some Orpingtons!) Eventually, I hope to have the full 12 hens that the city ordinance says I can have.
