Lethargic chicken with mushy crop?

I thought my chicken was egg bound and she still may be eggbound but I am not sure... I have soaked her twice and also inserted a finger in the vent but felt nothing there. I gave her calcium and also lubricated her vent area. She goes to the egg laying places and sits looking lethargic but there's no contractions on her backside like she's trying to lay an egg or anything.

I currently am blowdrying her and noticed that her crop is very mushy. I know she's not eating and I thought her crop was supposed to be emptied every morning, and I don't have a lot of time to research this so came here hoping for help to help her.

She's at least 8 yrs old.

Edited to add: her breath smells like poo so now I"m sure she has a sour crop at least and not eggbound.

I watched a Youtube video on how to massage the crop and hold the chicken upside down so she'd vomit up the fluid and that worked but then she died as she vomited. Even after she died fluid was coming out of her mouth. It's like she drowned in her own vomit. What did I do wrong? Does anyone know?

The last paragraph you entered - this was your hen that died?

It's possible she might have drowned. Did you hold her upside down the entire time or did you let her up to breathe every few seconds? If you didnt, then it's probably what could've happened.. it's just what happens sometimes, but it's all part of learning the chicken life

I watched a youtube video and they didn't mention she couldn't breathe nor that I had to bring her back up for air. I learned a BIG lesson here. I had no idea they couldn't breathe while vomiting.
Thanks for replying. I started to delete my post but maybe someone else can learn from my mistake. I've had chickens a looong time and never have I had one with a sour crop. She also had a very poopy rear, which is why I thought eggbound at first. She was old and had a very happy life with all her sisters eating bugs and laying in the sunshine.

Yes she died. My favorite chicken. Died due to my lack of knowledge.

Sometimes even if done very carefully chickens can aspirate and drown from vomiting them. Don't beat yourself up. It sounds like you did everything you could.

Awwww thanks for the hug Wyorp. Hard not to be upset at what could've been a different outcome.
