Straw Or Litter For the Coop?

A while back I remember reading somewhere where someone or maybe quite a few people, did not think using straw in the coop was a good idea. Ever since that time though, I have read where many use straw in the coop. Tonight as I go through my emails, I come across an article written by Kathy Mormino and again, I am reading where straw should not be used. So, I guess everyone uses 'litter' instead? Thanks for the suggestions and help.

I use dried grass clippings / leaves from the garden. Works very well and it's free

Have you thought about pine flakes on the coop? We use that with great success in our coop.

In the run we use straw, hay, grass clippings, leaves, pine needles & landscape debris.
 
I use pine shavings and it's amazing stuff. They pack it in extremely tight, so that each bag is like an endless fountain of shavings. My coop is very small, (too small for 3 chickens actually), but I get like 10 substrate changes out of each bag.
 
That's a great idea. I set up the coop this morning, and used the pine shavings we have in the bag already. The hay is still wrapped but it will get wet in the rain. I could probably use it in the run though. Thanks.
 
When compared to hay, I like the pine shavings better. I got a big bag and it does seem like it will last forever.
 
I use straw and hay . Mostly hay baled last year and have not had a issue so with that I don't think I want to read up on anything on that cause it works and ignorance is bliss. maybe I'll re visit this topic after we have a issue.
