I am in the process of moving our chicks to the coop. It is a building shed 6 by 4 and am wondering what ideas people have. I have not seen a lot of designs made from such a thing but am ready to make it work. Ventilation is a key and there is not much besides two little openings on north and south sides of shed. any ideas, pics, suggestions for this chix lover from NE!

Thanks

Here is the design, any ideas, suggestions for this to become home to my babies?

Thanks

Or do we feel as thought I should just build one out of wood? Or just find one online and purchase it and put it together? I need help chicken gurus!

I would say it depends on the price you can get it for.

You can always cut holes to add ventilation.

I am in the process of building a 4x6 coop. Most of the materials are left over from previous projects. Either look for posts by my name or the post 'Expanded my run - coop is next'.

I am not a 'guru' but I have learned LOTS from cruising this forum and getting input from others.

Stay away from the pre-built coops. They are usually poorly built and designed from what I have seen and heard.

Good luck!

What material is the shed made of? ...not wood? If you give your general location you will get advice appropriate to your climate. Buying a ready made shed and fitting out the interior for your chicks is a much better idea than the pre-fab coop kits. You are correct - adding lots of ventilation to the shed pictured would be needed. Picture of your site? How many birds?

Re-read your post and see that you are in Nebraska?

I would add BIG openings, covered in hardware cloth, especially on the south and east sides. It's actually kind of small, unless you are limited to four or five birds where you live. Mary

One easy way to add a lot of airflow would be to make a screen door for that people door.

Cut a pop door wherever the run is going to be. Cut more windows, covered with probably hardware cloth or something similar for predator control. Decide where you want the roosts, and position the windows so they don't blow directly over the roost so you can still have ventilation in the winter.

Do you already have this building? Is it not made of wood? If you don't have it already, I would probably skip it and go for a wood structure. It seems big, mostly due to the height, but really it's only going to house about 6 birds total, especially with your winters.

Yes in Nebraska, cold winters hot summers. Building is already up will post pics tomorrow of space around and actual building. Only housing 3 chix so space should be okay. Was thinking about pop door going into run and maybe replace front door with screen door for ventilation and scenery. Predators than scare me as possums and raccoons comb my backyard. Thanks for all the helpful responses!!
