thanks for the input, it's harder to tell without the single comb, and he/she hasn't been mounting any of the hens. But the face is bright red and you mentioned the hackle and saddle feathers are starting to show.
 
cockerel. He's a baby still, so I wouldn't be expecting crowing or mating. He's just at the young end for sex feathers. But, the amount of comb and the redness to it say male, as does the patchy coloring.
 
Is he still a boy? He's in a box for the night and we're going to try and sell him at the small animals auction in the morning.
