A local restaurant started giving away 5 gallon buckets and I snagged a few to use as nesting boxes. When I put dummy eggs in it to get them interested I noticed that they would roll to the center and get buried in shavings, so I had the idea of screwing a piece of 2x4 lengthwise down the center to give them a flat bottom and let wood shavings fill in the sides.
Is this a good idea or did I make the nesting box too small? Right now nobody wants to lay in it, but that could just be because I had to put the bucket under the roost instead of inside it for space reasons (still inside the coop where they get locked up at night though).
