Do I need to worry about a young garter snake in my brooder pen with week old chicks? Went out to check on them this morning and there it was a couple feet from the chicks. I tried to get it out but it ran underneath old paper feed bags we are using to line the pen. Do I need to worry about it? I'll keep working at it if it will harm them. Thanks :)

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Chicks are probably too big for that to be any harm. I think they eat bugs and such.

I usually don't worry about them because they are garden friend. But I can't say for sure that I wouldn't have tried stomping it under the bags!

Their space no big deal, my space being invaded, different story.

Good luck!

Thank you :) I've been a reader on this forum for over a year and have learned so much. I have 17 hens, 2 roos, 5 maran chicks and 15 more coming in a couple weeks that will be Australorps, New Hampshires and Araucanas, love raising chickens :)

I think if the birds were older, the garter snake would have to worry about them.

My chickens "LOVE" garter snakes to death.

Garter snakes are so tiny even as adults I can't imagine they could do anything to a chick. I agree it most likely was attracted to the brooder because of the warmth.

Don't be so sure the garter snake will ignore baby chicks. If it's hungry, it is entirely capable of eating a chick. I captured this drama at sundown a couple years ago. The garter snake was your average size 12 incher and the lizard was about the size of a baby chick of less than a week old. It took the lizard a few hours but it swallowed the lizard.

Garter snakes are real bad-a$$es. I'd snake proof that chick pen.
