Hi all,

I'm getting different responses from different people regarding my coop and run size. Coop is 7ft by 7ft with a run of 21ft x 7ft

How many birds will this size coop support please?

Looking to keep hybrids i.e. Hylines/Leghorns

That's a incomplete question. How are you going to use the coop? My coop is for roosting ONLY no water, no food and no nesting boxes and no staying in the coop during the day so I could roost 100 plus in your coop if it is well vented and 6ft tall.

Now if you are going to keep your chickens all day, food and water, nesting boxes in yours---that would be a completely different story. What is your plans?

Roosting at night. In the run all day. External nest boxes. Using pipe work to make a waterer and feeder which will be off the ground. All the floor space available to the birds. Even in the run all floor space available to birds.

So you are not going to have feed, water nor nesting boxes in yours either?? How tall inside, windows for venting?

I would say up to 12 birds unless you have long stretches of bad weather where they won't be able to go out much. Otherwise the general rule is minimum 4 sq ft coop/10 sq ft run per bird.
 
Depending on what standard you want to go with, since these are smaller birds, maybe 16 to 18. Some might say more........or less.

Assuming you go that high, what do you plan to do about keeping the run dry and clean, including under the coop? What do you plan to do with all the soiled litter?

Then there is the more important question.......how many eggs do you want.....as in dozens per week? That is ultimately what should determine how many birds you would want to keep.
 
What would you suggest @Howard E regarding the run. I was planning on leaving it open and covered with netting. I can cover it if need be. The space under the coop is sufficient for shelter if need be. I want to setup a compost bin. The ground is just grass patch at the moment. Under the coop is grave led and open to suggestions. Still a work in progress.

As part of my muscle building program I go through 7 eggs a day 7 days week

So eggs are important. Extra would be easily used up with family next door and locally.

you will want at least 10 birds for 7 eggs a day..imo.
eta depending on the breed you choose.

Where are you wanting this compost bin? In the run?

The under the coop area will be hard to clean.
Are you going to have multiple doors to access the inside of this coop?
It will be hard to clean with only one door unless you plan on climbing inside it.

My first coop was built very similar to this, with the area on the bottom surrounded with hardwire cloth. One side of mine is on hinges so it can be raised up and raked out (the under side) It was a pain in the rear, but I managed to get it done.
