Hi everyone!
I really want a chickie, my older sister is getting one soon, and their sooo cute!
My sister is riding horses and is saving up alot of money because she says she will have to support her chickie. And its like she doesn't even want eggs, she wants to show her chicken. I think its funny because chickens aren't like dogs or cats or horses that you can show them. But anyways she's old enough now and my dad wont let me get one what do I do?

Welcome to BYC! There are so many benefits to raising chickens. Here's a good thread. Perhaps have your parents read through it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/why-raise-chickens-in-your-backyard-the-many-reasons-benefits

There are several factors you will have to consider however. Time and space being two of them. Chickens, like any other animal are a commitment to your time. They need daily attention. If you live in town, you will want to check to make sure of any ordinances in place. Many towns have a set maximum number of chickens that you can have and often times only allow hens within city limits. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don't want just one bird. Chickens are flock animals and are incredibly social. You need to have at least two.Three or more is even better.

Research, research, research! BYC is a great place to do that. The more you know, the better off you'll be. (And maybe better off at convincing dad that you're really passionate about it and willing to commit yourself to your chicks.)

And actually, you can show chickens. It's a very popular hobby, as a matter of fact. I suggest researching poultry shows (I'm not all that into showing.) Like pretty much all animal shows, they are competitions that follow a set of breed standards. In the poultry world, it is known as the Standard of Perfection. Judges base winners of prizes on this standard.

Best of luck to you! I hope you get to experience the awesome world of poultry keeping!
