Ok, so my incubator arrived yesterday, I have not set it up yet to check temp & humidity, for one, I have no idea where I should put it! My house has lots of sliding glass doors going outside & lots of windows, so having a hard time trying to decide where it would be good to not have drafts & all. Also I will go today to buy anything extra that I need from our local feed store, such as thermometer & hygrometer. Is that all I need? I have ordered eggs, but they will still be a few days, unfortunately I couldn't find any local. If there's anything else that I am forgetting or not thinking of, please let me know! I will probably be on here with a lot of questions, even though I have read, & read and read, when I actually start the process. Thanks again, I'm so excited to get started!

To start with thermometers and a hygrometer is the important thing. What kind of incubator did you get? Does it have an automatic turner or are you hand turning?
 
I got the hovabator genesis with no turner. I bought a extra thermometer but wasn't able to find one for humidity, that was at a hatchery place so may look somewhere else.
 
I have both a very bright LED flashlight and a proper egg candler. They work equally well for candling the eggs. The candler has a cord to the wall and a rubber bit to put the egg on to seal in light -although if you hold the egg right your hand can do that-, so the only real benefit to that is it is easier to find and is not stolen for light if someone in the house is going outside at night, meanwhile it's less convenient to actually use since it has a cord.
I'd suggest a battery powered one if you were to get one, only that would just be a flashlight with an adapter on the light end.

Excellent choice! I love my Hovabator. I do use the rubber shelf liner on the bottom of mine because it cushions the eggs and it's better for little chicken feet when they hatch. I get it at the dollar store. I hand turn as well. I can add a pic of the liner I use so you know what I am talking about.

I use a small bright flashlight, always have. You want a strong light though, especially if you do eggs with darker shells.

You can pick up a thermometer/hygrometer combo such as the accurite at most department stores, hardware stores. Many people get the cheap reptile hygrometers at the pet stores and just salt test them for accuracy.

Oh thanks, I'll definitely pickup some of that shelf liner, good idea, never would have thought of that! I'll look again for the hygrometer. Couldn't find it at our Walmart either, but we have a sad one anyway. I'll check our farm store.

I'm surprised Walmart didn't have them. Our TSC has them in the outside thermometer section. I asked when I first started hatching explaining it was for my bator, they didn't have those for incubators I was told. Got the brilliant idea of asking where their outside thermometers were...yup, they had them...lol

I got these two babies today, I love the lavender ameraucanas & just couldn't pass them up. Paid pretty hefty for them though, I'm really hoping they will both be girls, but probably won't be,lol. I'm hoping to get to hatch some of these, but seems the eggs are pretty hard to come by, or at least to get the true ones anyway.
