So one of my hens went broody- I believe that's the term? She started sitting on a couple eggs a few days ago. Well now all of my other hens (4 of them) have started laying their eggs on top of her! Poor thing is trying to sit on all of these eggs they keep laying on her. So my questions are, do I mark eggs and take the new ones away? How will I know which ones she started with? She's a smaller hen so I found that they can lay on 6 eggs or so.. I'm not even sure how many she has now but I would guess close to a dozen. Any other tips or suggestions?

This is new to me and exciting! I was going to buy a incubator this year but looks like I lucked out on my own!

I would think you should take the new ones away- if she keeps sitting on them until they all hatch, she'll be there forever!

Also, If the chickens are laying the eggs on top of her, I think you should separate her from the rest of the flock.

I wish I could separate her but I don't have the space to yet :/ I took 3 away this evening that were to the side of her and cold. I'm going to try to mark the other ones tomorrow so I can take the new ones away each day. Poor thing!

Okay. Then, I would suggest you try making a swinging door into the nesting box, perhaps if the other chickens try to get in, the chicken will unintentionally block the swinging door from moving inward. She could still get out, and in, if no chickens are in there.

Of course she made a nest on the coop floor..not in one of our 5 nesting boxes

Our new coop should hopefully be done this weekend so I will move the other hens to the new coop
