Hi! I am an excited new chicken owner, my husband and 9 yo son and I purchased six of the cutest bantam chicks today from Tractor Supply. They are three days old and have gotten quite comfortable in their little nest we have made for them consisting of soft paper bedding with food and water available and a nice heat light above. All approved by the very knowledgeable employee that guided us through the process and picked out the little peeps. My 9 year old son has been a very attentive momma hen all day, showing them where to eat and drink, making sure they are warm. However, one peep will not stop squawking!! Is there something else I am missing? The other five are sleeping. Surprisingly they appear to sleep almost lying down. I have been periodically checking on them throughout the night. Thanks for any information! Love the site, everyone is so supportive and helpful. Thank you!

Have you checked the screamer for pasty butt?? That is when poo sticks to their backend and prevents new poos from passing. A chick can die rapidly if they cannot pass their wastes. Please check out "Pasty Butt," just put that in the search box and it will come up.

Are you sure the chick is eating and drinking - not just standing near the containers. The others chicks may be pushing her out.

Hi and welcome to BYC. You have some good pointers from D/Diva. More generally, these links may be informative:

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Welcome & Congratulations!

As you have already received links to some good starting points from Ken and some good tips from Diva, I will just wish you all the best.

I have seen some absolutely adorable pictures of sleeping chicks, some on their backs with their little feet in the air etc .. so cute!

Anyways, I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
