Unzipping but not a single peep?

Yesterday my dog suddenly passed away and I spent a few good hours making a funeral wake for him and a vigil, so I hadn't really paid much attention to the eggs until late last evening and I noticed one had a crack half the circumference of the egg but when I listened to it I didn't hear any peeping. I was so sure I had lost yet another animal whe I came home at his morning from church and I noticed the unzipping had increased! I'm not sure why I couldn't hear the duckling though, I was worried it had suffocated being trapped inside too long. Has anyone else experienced a silent unzipping, or should I step in?

I'm so sorry. That must be hard :(

Have you tried tapping the egg? They often make a noise when you do that. I've had chicks hatch silently before and they've been fine. I wouldn't think your duckling is suffocating. It might just be tired. If it's unzipping on it's own then I'm sure it's perfectly fine.
Good luck with your duckling!

Hi Jet,

I did tap the egg gently and I didn't get a response. But hearing your experience with silent chicks is relieving. I'd be tired too if I had to try to break out of an egg!

Don't open the incubator.....:(....The humidity needs to stay high so it won't shrink wrap inside...It can take 12 to 24 hours to pip and Zip out..I am hatching again right now too..I have two that pipped yesterday ..They rest lots..:)

Hopefully your hatch is going/ went well! It's been a few days since Saturday night and he has made some progress but I still haven't heard him chirp or peep. I haven't found any advice on what to do if it has started to unzip but doesn't peep, is there a certain time or days after pipping that I should be concerned?

It. Piped and started zipping ?...Is that what's going on?....It possibly died or you could gently tap,out the shell from the pip/zip hole counter clock wise and gently peal back a bit of the white membrane..If its alive it will peep...Do not chip off the entire shell...Just a line...:)....

All mine hatched ...:).....100% hatch rate ...I had to assist a few..

Best wishes..

Yep, that's exactly what's happening. There's still more progress but when I get home from work I'll check on the egg. He's got a long line across the she'll like an almost perfect example of unzipping and he's rolled around a lot but not coming out or any sound. Hopefully he just needs assistance and hasn't died, he's currently the only egg that appears to have made it this far.

I hope it goes well. I'd love an update when it hatches!

It's been a few days and I believe the duckling may be stuck in his egg, as the liquid coming keeps drying to a honeycolor and is very sticky. Is there a chance this duckling is still alive and should I assist it? Still no peeling either, but he makes progress (very slow progress) usually in the night and this morning I saw through the bator that it managed to roll over in place as I had a mark on it when I was still turning the eggs. Any advice?
