I have a pair of Isabel Cuckoo Orpingtons. Hen and rooster live together in an area that has a coop 7x6 feet attached to a run that is 30x10 feet. The hen is setting with 7 eggs under her. When the chics hatch do i need to separate the rooster from mom and chics?

I kept my broody separated from the rest of the flock for less than a week and then she marched those chicks right out into the thick of it and we never had a problem. Our rooster actually seems to watch out for them. They are his offspring, after all. I suppose it does differ from rooster and rooster, but mine has been very watchful over them so far.

Every situation will be unique. But so far my roosters have NEVER been a problem for my broody's and their babies and are indeed more likely to protect them being their offspring. They want their seed spread.

Do you only have them separated for breeding season? My other hens also don't mess with my broody's and babies. Seems like keeping your boy with only a non mating hen might be more frustrating for him.

That is what I was thinking. I think it would be better to put him back with the other girls because of that.

My biggest aggressors when I have chicks are teen girls who are still working their way up in the pecking order. But with plenty of space, and a good broody... no problem. My Silkies open up a can of "crazy mama" on my bigger girls!
