selling chicks rant, slightly

Ugh! today I sold 6 chicks (state law) to a person , an hour or so later they were brought back because they were fighting.

I feel bad, I thought I explained how the bantams were not housed with the other chicks and even though they look the same age they are not.

One of the most gentle bantams you ever could meet beat up the other chicks. The buyer put them in a "large cage" and all heck broke loose.

I feel so bad for the buyer, myself and mostly, the poor chicks!!!

I'm relatively new to selling. Lesson learned. Do not sell chicks of different ages.

What was the age difference? I often put my 2-3 week old bantams with LF that are in their first week and they do fine. And I even had a bunch of 5 week old bantams with 9 week old bantams and LF up until I sold most at a swap this past weekend.

the bantams are 12 weeks and the LF are 6 weeks. They were close in size and had been socializing peacefully together in my yard for 2 weeks. I think the cage they put them in was the real issue. They had no way to run away and give the bantam her personal space. They said it was a large rabbit cage.

Gah!

That is one thing I hate about selling - you don't know what kind of hare brained idiot scheme they are going to come up with for housing and other care.

Last year I sold a woman some guinea keets. They were about 6 weeks old, iirc, and already off heat and free ranging, as I brood outdoors and like to get them integrated and free ranging early. Well anyway as she was leaving she told me she had found some free metal rabbit hutches from a breeder that was quitting and she was going to put them in there so their poop would fall right through and she would set it in the sun so they would be nice and warm. I was literally tongue tied and didn't say anything and I felt horrible after she left imagining these poor birds on hot wire cooking in a box, since it was in the 90s outside. Not to mention she would learn shortly that their poop isn't nice little pellets that are going to fall through the wire.

I have had several more incidences where I really had to wonder what sort of fate I sent chicks or guineas to. I don't know if I am untrusting or realistic.
