I recently noticed my girls were sometimes laying in odd places, so I went to check the coop. My timing was perfect - caught the thief in the act of trying to swallow an egg !

A beautiful yellow rat snake had her head in the nest box, and her mouth around the egg. After I got some pictures, I touched her, and she immediately ejected the egg, and understandably got all pissy about me interrupting her meal (actually - MY meal !).
she was struggling to get it down - I'm not sure she would have been able to. I brought her out of the coop, and shooed her on her way. Guess I need to collect eggs earlier in the day ...

I happen to love snakes - so this serpent picked a lucky yard to invade ! Ha.

That is a gorgeous snake! What a brilliant shot, perfect timing. I too love snakes and have never had any problems with them. I generally encourage them in the yard and garden, where they eat all the mice, slugs and other pests.
