We will have a covered run attached to our coop - what does everyone put on the ground? It is currently mostly dirt where the run will be, some grass near the front. It is under some of our enormous pine trees, so there are tons of pine needles I could use. How often do I need to rake it out? I don't want to use shavings out there.....
Do I really need something on the ground if it's dirt/grass? Would it work to just rake it out daily (it is along a hillside and I can just push all the droppings down the hill....super convenient!).

You are asking about in the run, correct? I put everything in there! When I clean the coops (2-3x a year, pine shavings mainly), that goes in there. When I mow, the grass clippings, pine cones, etc go in there. When I clean up pine needles, that goes in there. Leaves, trimmings, some of the weeds, veggie scraps, etc go in there. For the grass and pine needles I do try to make sure they are brown before they go in there, though, as that composts better. We have two acres and we will put the grass clippings in there and it will be a good six inches deep and within only a couple weeks it is down flat again. But its great for the birds to pick through while they are locked up when I am at work.

We do Deep Litter in the run; hay, straw, grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, landscape weeds, veggies and fruit. We clean out every spring so all that beautiful compost can be tilled into the garden.
