Hello from SW Louisiana. I've been wanting chickens for a few years now. I was determined to have a coop and run all ready before taking the plunge buuut. This past week my 9 year old nephew (who has had chickens for awhile) and my 3 children saw some at the local co-op and now we have 3 chicks. So the process for a coop has begun! We've had these chicks about a week and I can see how it can be addicting!

Welcome to BYC.

The good news is that you have some time before the coop is really required, so you still have time to try and get it right. Right now, the brooder is much more important to keep them warm and healthy. I'm in the same boat. My chicks are growing quickly in the brooder and I'm still working on their long-term home.

There is plenty to learn here. Just read and ask questions in the appropriate forum areas and you should get quick and (mostly) good answers.

Edit: You might want to click on the "Coops" link at the top to get plenty of ideas on what is possible.

Welcome & Congratulations!

I recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

If you have an questions specific to your baby chicks, this is a link to the Raising Baby Chicks Forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks

Good luck!

I hope you enjoy being an active BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
