Baby chick with lumps at top of wings. Noticed a week ago and was being peck.....resolved that issue but lumps seem to be getting bigger. Almost like callous.

Any ideas?

No mounting noted. And they are still inside the house so I watch them frequently. The chick is about three weeks old and is the smallest of the batch of six. She does tend to scoot under the other chicks frequently. About 10 days ago we did notice that they were bleeding At that time we had them in a box and we gave away half of them so we were down to six and we move them into a larger porta crib. Since then they seem to all be getting along fine.

Is she active, eating, drinking and pooping well?

When you watch her, is she picking/preening at those spots?
Also what are you using for heat - lamp, mama heating pad, etc.? Any chance her wings/shoulders became overheated/burned?

The lumps/wounds could be from where the others have plucked/picked at her. Apply some Blu-Kote or Pick No More to the wounds, these have antiseptic properties and will help hide the redness, so hopefully the others won't pick at it.

She is acting normal. She does not seem to be aware of lumps. I am heating with the new heating plates which I love. Since she is the smallest, I would not think that she is getting burned but that is a possibility. Maybe she is squeezing in and ending up on top at night. I will raise it as they are getting older. Thanks so much. I think that you may have landed it.

Let me how she does. It's just that the lumps are so symmetrical that it looks like she may have been pressing them equally against the plates for heat?

Follow up..... callouses still there but feathers are starting to grow over area. I think that you were right and they will probably take some time to resolve but feathers should protect in future. Thank you again.

Did you figure out what this was from? Just noticed my largest chick has something similar and I am also using the Premier1heating plate for the brooder. I think she is rubbing her wings on it.
