Well, here we are about 6 weeks out with the hatchlings. They are growing like weeds, we have had them in the house in an open cage. We have been feeding Chick Chow :) and water. At 6 weeks we change the papers in the incubator about 4 times a day. I have a couple questions, I have already Googled, but I would like some expert advice here.

  1. We have been keeping the warming light on 24x7. As I said they live in another room inside the house. When should we start turning the warming lights out at night?
  2. When should we take them out to the coop and start acclimating them to the 2 other grown chickens?
  3. We were forced to buy a 50lb bag of chick feed. I assume, that once the birds have moved out permanently to the chick coop, we can start feeding them regular diet. Can we feed any leftover Chick Feed as a mixer or supplement to the regular feed we are currently using, for all the chickens?
  4. And a bonus question; Why do these chicks lay down on their side, with their heads sometimes laying on the other chicks. Its the funniest thing to see. :)

Hi, to offer my opinion on your questions:

By 6 weeks, and being kept in the house, they no longer need additional heat
  1. When should we take them out to the coop and start acclimating them to the 2 other grown chickens?
These links should help in terms of integration, but they should already be outdoors for a few hours every day by now:

No problem in using starter feed, even until they begin to lay. Layers feed is not the best for chickens, unless they are laying. general flock feed and oyster shell in a separate container is a good way to manage a flock of different ages.

Agree with CTKen, but want to add that while you can keep feeding starter you need to make sure the feed doesn't get too old while you are using it up. Not more than six weeks from date of manufacture is the guideline.
