Hi there I am new to this sight although I have been reading for a couple of months now. I am a new chicken owner only interested in keeping hens as I live in the suburbs .I love taking care of the four that I have, one white silkie a black d'uccle and two isa brown they are definitely keeping me amused. I am looking to add another three to my team and would like some advise on other bantams and if an EE would be good for Queensland climate please. Look forward to plenty of views .

Welcome!

Sorry, I have not had experience keeping EE’s in Queensland, but I have Pekins [bantam Cochins], a bantam Langhsan and a Silkie/Pekin cross. All of them cope OK with Queensland temps but the two Pekins and Langshan seem to cope better than the frizzle Pekin and Silkie/Pekin cross who do a bit of panting and hanging of spread wings. They range from 4 years old to 2 years old so have coped through a few summers.

You might want to pop in to the Aussie thread to say hello and ask about EE’s: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-that-funny-little-island/32950#post_18408306

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thankyou for your reply feel better that my question wasn't too silly. I have been looking at the pekin / cochin quite a bit . As you know we had a long hot summer and our recent cyclonic weather had me worried about my little friends but was so pleased to see them still thriving. My silkie is the only one that hasn't given us any eggs but we didn't get her for eggs . My little d'uccle is laying at least every other day though which is wonderful but very surprising . I am going to work out how to upload pics soon though because I love looking at all the pucs on here .

Oooh, I did forget to mention, Pekins, like Silkies, have a tendency to frequently go broody in summer so while they make great pets and great mumma's, not really good egg layers. With broodiness and then moulting, we have not had any eggs from 5 bantams since the end of March and back then, only one was laying anyways.

If you would like to check out some pictures of my girls, they are available on the link in my signature 'My Chicken Page'
