I finally got my first batch of chicks! It has been three days now, but I thought I would share some pictures of them the first day I brought them home and hopefully update this with new pictures so you can watch them grow! All three of them are Easter Egger pullets and I just love them! Everything has gone well for the first few days so hopefully they will all live long healthy lives!

here they are on their way home, I thought I would include this picture because when they are under the red heat lamp you can't really tell their true colors. From left to right this is Rose, Clover, and Ivy. Rose and Clover look very similar except Rose is bigger and has more of a tan base color where Clover is mostly true yellow with brown markings. Ivy is the odd one out with a yellow/white body and all black markings, not an ounce of brown anywhere on her. I can't wait to see what they look like when they grow up!

Here they are in the brooder, like I said it is harder to really see their colors under the heat lamp. Again from left to right this is Rose, Clover, and Ivy.

This is a close up of Ivy

... and Clover

... and last but certainly not least, Rose. (She likes to sleep in the feeder.)

Here are my girls! I just love them and I can't wait for them to get bigger so I can take them outside and see what color their feathers will be, but at the same time, I love them being so small and fluffy. I will be updating this hopefully once a week until they are fully grown!

Thank you so much! Like I said, I can't wait to see what colors they are when they are grown up but I know I'll miss their cute fluffy stage! I'm trying to take as many pictures as I can while they are so adorable!

It's official! The girls are one week old today and I have some updated pictures for you! I can't believe how fast they are growing, I can't even keep up with them! I'm just going to share a few things I have learned through my first week of keeping chicks just to give a few pointers to anyone who might be starting out before adding new pictures! (If you're not interested in tips for raising chicks, just skip right to the pictures

)

I have raised their water up in the brooder a little and that has really helped to keep shavings and other nasty things out of it for a much longer time so I don't waste as much water. I also added a few sticks to the brooder for the babies so they can climb on it and perch if they want to, they have just started using it since it took a few days to get used to. I also added grit a few days ago and they seem to really enjoy pecking and scratching in it, but I have tried introducing some treats and they really want nothing to do with them so we will see where that goes as they get older. The last thing I found in my first week of keeping chicks is that the recommended temperature for the first week of 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit was really too hot for my chicks. If you are using this post for advice, take this with a grain of salt since every group of chicks is different, but I just found that the chicks would stay as far away from the heat lamp as possible until I lowered the temperature to anywhere between 90-95 degrees and then they seemed much more comfortable. Like I said, just watch your chicks for the first few hours and see judge what temperature seems to be right for them because sometimes the recommended temperature might be too high or too low.

Anyway here are the pictures of my 1 week old babies!

So here is Rose, she is BY FAR the biggest of the bunch, I can't believe how much she has grown. She is twice, if not three times bigger than when I first brought her home. As you can see, she has quite a few wing feathers, some tail feathers and a few feathers in her shoulder area. She hasn't really changed in color, she is still a warm tan color with a very straight brown stripe down her back (one of the only things that distiguishes her from Clover as you will see in a moment)

This is Clover, she is definitely the friendliest of them all so far. Rose doesn't mind being handled and Ivy doesn't really dislike it but she definitely isn't very snuggly by any means, but Clover on the other hand seems happiest when I am holding her, petting her and letting her run around out of the brooder. She is a little smaller than rose and she doesn't have the same tan coloring as she is more whitish than she is brown, and the sripe on her back is a much more rounded shape than Rose's is. She is also the only one with puffy little cheeks which are so cute! She has some wing and tail feathers alos but not as many as Rose (I am beginning to think Rose might be a couple days older than the others)

And here is Ivy. She is still very much the odd one out since she is mostly black and grey where the others are brown and she is the only one with feathers on her feet and legs (which is a little concerning since I'm afraid she might be the wrong breed thst got mixed in with my order on accident, if anyone has any ideas on whether or not she is an Easter Egger I would love to hear it). She also seems to be the youngest since she doesnt have nearly as many feahers as the other two. She has a few wing feathers but none on her tail yet. There is no question that she is at the top of the pecking order, she definitely bosses the other girls around which is weird since Rose is much bigger than she is. As you can see she is enjoying the perch I added for them so far.

So there they are! I hope you enjoy my progress pictures and I will be posting again next week!

Unfortunately because of the update, I wasn't able to post the 2 or 3-week updates, but I do have them now. Here are the 2 week old pictures

this is Rose, in a week she has gotten many more tail and wing feathers, and she has learned to fly out of the coop so a chicken wire covering was definitely a necessity

here is another picture of Rose

here is Ivy, as you can see she seems to be a little behind the others in terms of how many feathers she has. She's definitely still the odd one out of the group since she is a different color altogether, she has fewer feathers and her body just looks different. We will see where that goes I guess

and finally little Clover. She isn't nearly as big as Rose but she can be a little more difficult to tell apart from her since her coloring is similar. The one thing that really sets her apart still is her fluffy face

These are the chicks at 2 weeks. They are getting bigger and bigger every day and they are starting to explore much more!

And since the chicks are now way past 3 weeks old since the last post was not on time, here are the 3-week pictures too! I have been bringing them outside a lot since the weather warmed way up here all of a sudden and they are loving it!

These first three pics were taken the day they turned 3 weeks, the top is Ivy followed by Rose and then all three (Clover and Ivy from left to right on top and then Rose on the bottom). Most of the changes that have taken place in the last week are that they have gotten more feathers all over their bodies and much larger tail and wing feathers (even Ivy has little tail feathers now finally!).

This was taken today, at about 3 and a half weeks old. I brought the girls outside because it was a BEAUTIFUL day and the LOVED IT! They ran around for more than 2 hours before I brought them inside because I had things to do, they probably could have stayed out much longer. In this picture they are laying in the sun enjoying it, they haven't really had a chance to do that before. This was their quick little nap before exploring my front yard!

also, I FINALLY got my coop built today! It has been sitting in a box in my garage since 2 weeks before the chicks came and finally we got it built. I will probably post pictures of it in the next week, I am still in the process of staining it to help make it more weather proof. Pretty soon the girls will be out in it!
