Hello everyone,I have a question concerning using sawdust to keep quail eggs upright during incubation. I have a simple tray style automatic egg turner and incubator from ebay and the trays have no slot to place eggs. The trays are very large and the eggs role back and forth. I was wondering if layering a thin layer of sawdust in the trays to keep the eggs up right would hurt?

Better to use play dough or the likes... As sad dust will get all we once they hatch... And humidity gets up there.

I was strictly going to used the sawdust to keep the upright until three days before they hatch. Once they reach the no turn day they would go onto the plastic screen inside the incubator.

Where is the sawdust from? With constant humidity anything in the sawdust might into your eggs (I'm thinking wood treatments, cat pee, resin from pine or cedar). It may be a small risk but I would avoid it. Recycle an old milk carton and make some plastic egg collars. Cut strips out of the plastic and then cut tabs to make them circles like the paper ones that come with Easter egg dye. Or better yet, slice some PVC tubing with a band saw to make some reusable rings to set them on.

its sawdust from a dead ash tree. it was cut with a hand saw and not treated in any way. I baked the dust in the oven for 1 hour at 170 to dry it out good. Ill look into making it out of pvc that's a good idea.

Hehehe. Brilliant, right? Too bad I didn't come up with it myself. I read a thread about a byc-er who was trying to create a egg rotator and used the PVC in just that way. I thought to myself what a great way to make the divots for the eggs to set in!
