Thanks Dom

I believe chickens lay whatever color all thru their lives. If I'm wrong, I'm sure the other greeters will correct me. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Hi and welcome to BYC. D/Diva is correct. Basically, egg shells are genetically either blue or white but the brown outer colouring is the result of a number of additional genes that "coat" the egg. Once you've cracked open a brown egg, the inside of the shell is white. Do the same with a blue egg, and the inside of the shell is blue.

Here's some links on egg colour genetics, if you are interested:

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some good starting points and answers to your question, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
