Should I Breed Chickens?

Also, one more question.

Are they even good pets? As in could you actually go outside and play with them (sort of, I know they aren't going to play fetch) or even just sit down with them.

I don't know anyone who makes a profit with chickens, not if they raise them right and feed them properly.
And the ones who don't take the proper care don't make a profit for long. In general, raising animals for sale is not very profitable. If you have specific knowledge of a species, and get lucky, you might make money, but the elusive "profit" is much harder to get.

I've heard from others that the chickens actually pay for themselves. Maybe the start-up price could be a bit costly if I take care of them properly, sell eggs and that I would probably make some profit. Also, I'm not sure how it works with eggs. Is there a difference between eggs we eat and the ones that make chickens, I know it is probably the same but what makes the difference Is it just the fact that we decide to eat the eggs before they hatch? Bit of a stupid question but just clarifying.

I can almost guarantee that unless you are keeping flocks of many thousands, making a profit is a pipe dream. Breaking even, when one considers the capital outlay and labour, medical care, vaccinations etc is beyond the reach of most of us, even after many years. If I can sell enough eggs to almost pay for my flock's feed -then I'm happy. The income will never pay for the capital investments that I have made. If you go down the route of breeding to show standards, only a tiny minority make any money from it, and I'd still say that it likely does not constitute profit. People who breed to show standards do it for the love of the hobby, and most certainly not to make money.

Fertile chicken eggs require the services of a cock bird. No cock bird = infertile eggs. Fertile eggs do not begin to develop unless they are either incubated or brooded by a hen (not all breeds have this hormonal trigger to brood eggs). To answer your question, both fertile and infertile eggs are eaten and they are exactly the same, in terms of consumption.

Although I asked about profit the money isn't the reason I'm looking into chickens. I just want to have different types of pets, cats, chickens etc. without having to fork up hundreds of dollars for them because I don't have a job as I am still in school. So possibly instead of 'do they make a profit' how about 'Will I be spending $400 on the chickens.' I do not want to get a pet and mistreat them.
Do they need anything fancy? Or is it just like one of those cages (that they can walk out of when they want) and a good clean 3 times a week. Can anyone give me a starting price and also the price of the food they get.
