Im a new proud momma of 19 lovely lil chickies. I have a mixed batch breed wise. a few of each breed they had at Rural King.
So far im on day 3. I would have 20 but one died of Pasty butt the day i got them. I hadnt realized it at the store and honestly hadnt known what i was seeing till i looked it up.
Since that my chickies (between 1-2 weeks old) have done amazing. I have them set up in a large, circular whirlpool bathtub that goes unused in my bathroom.
They love the brooder (the tub lined with pinechips and warmed by a red tinted heat lamp. 125 watts). They mill about freely and i handle them regularly to check their bottoms and general cuddling.
Most are very docile and happy to be held, others will need some work that i am happy to put in.
Today i introduced them to cut up worms. It was a lovely frenzy!!

Sounds like you are well on your way to Chicken Lady Mama of the year

Your chicks are very lucky to have you.

Would it be ok if i used dried dirt from my yard to sprinkle in the Brooder? I was reading up on their digestive needs and i want to make sure they are getting a bit of "grit".

Welcome & Congratulations!

This is a good Forum on which to ask questions about your little ones: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks

As my chicks are raised outside by their mumma, they have access to grit from day 1 so I can not answer your question with complete confidence but I am sure I have read on BYC that people add a hand full of garden dirt into the brooder for their littlies to scratch through.

Your bubs are adorable and I just love the expression on the little one in the middle of that second photo!!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
