Dorking question... which variety is the LARGEST in general?  And AK - are yours single or rose combed?  Red wouldn't screw with my group progress as much as playing with silver genes.  And I'm greedy.

It's German Shepherd Dog, they HERD, they don't Ard, don't Pard and don't Erd.

I don't know that there's much difference between the reds and the silver greys, not that I've seen anyway.  Don't know about the other colors.  Just depends on the breeding, I guess.
WWD, my silver greys are single combed... big grand things they are, too. smile  My Red Lucas is a rose comb.  I must say, with the cold weather we've been getting, I prefer the rose combs.  If I don't hatch any red chicks this year (and yes, I'm a-gonna try!) I will try breeding Lucas with my SGDs to see if I can start my own line from that.  Right now I only have the one red rooster, but I have 3 SGD pullets and 2 SGD roos.  I was on the waiting list for 25 from Ideal, but I cancelled... I'm going to start small and work my way up from there.  I think I have about 18 eggs set right now. wink

I don't know why Dorkings aren't more prolific than they are... they are beautiful gentle birds... hu

If you end up with Red singles you have my undying attention smile and some of my  money.  LOL failing that I can sure work with big silver babies.

I'd rather stick with singles, our weather isn't that cold and moving rose back out of the line isn't something I've done.

I'm going to dodge the hatchery dorkings, too.  Big and GRAND are good things to add to the batch I have here.

Luck over the winter, gawd you're getting lousy weather.

We want Dorkings so badly out here. I vow to finally get them this spring.

Has anyone noticed whether Dorkings scratch up a garden less than other breeds? We read in Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry that the short legs kept them from being as destructive in gardens. The obsession with them spiralled out of control from there.

Any information would be muy helpful smile

I don't let mine free-range, but I have noticed that they don't scratch around in the pens as much as some of the other birds... does that help?

I'm going to have SGD babies in a couple of weeks... celebrate  I just candled and found out that some of my girl's first eggs are fertile!!

All I can say is just be patient... it took me all summer to finally get the few birds I have.  I tried chick orders, shipped eggs... If you decide to order from a hatchery, MMHs chicks are good, and Ideal has them but you have to order early.  I ordered last June, and was put on a waiting list.  They called yesterday and asked if a March ship date would work for me.  I just don't have room for 25 more chicks right now, so I cancelled the order and decided to hatch my own.  But they are well worth the wait... absolutely wonderful breed. smile

herechickchick, the red dorkings are fabulous.  I am always amazed at how colorful my roo is.  Greens and purples, and blues and reds, and golds... and he's not aggressive at all. smile

Yay ADAM!!!  LOL another person in TN with dorkings has to be nothing but good smile  As soon as I get some broodies setting I may try to get eggs.  Still building my incubator.

I didn't like the little foam one at all.  I'm too clutzy to work in that small a space.  Tired of being singed on the darn heater, the lid falling off when I just want to peek.  Fill in the gripe........ LOL

Byc Dorkings unite!
