Raising Squab, old fashioned style?

There are many on this forum who do not agree with the subject. To them I am sorry. And I have said that before. It is not my intention to insult or upset people here. I am here to learn and help others if I can.

On the other hand I will not change who I am for others. I am an omnivore. Equal opportunity. If it wont kill me I will eat it, be it meat, vegetable, or mineral.

I want to raise chickens and pigeons. I would also like to do a little breeding as well. The side effect of those two things is extra birds. There are only two things you can do with them, keep them alive or kill them. I will cull those that I can't keep. I will not waste these culls either. There are not enough people around here to sell to or give them all away. That means I need to kill them, and I would rather eat them or feed them to our dogs then through them in the garbage.

This offends people. I can't help that. I don't talk about this here on this site so that I don't offend too many people. But it is the reality.

Mad Carper,

I will continue this thread with pics as soon as I am able to start building. I just have too many other things to finish on the house and property before I can start the coop/loft. For one I need to finish the landscaping so that it has a place to be built. Hard to build in the mud and snow... lol My sad reality at the moment. I have started collecting the materials with 2x4's and plywood. I also have shingles I think. Although I would prefer metal. Just have to wait and see. Maybe I will be able to salvage some.

Thanks for the support.

Edit: I should also add that there are a lot of very helpful and knowledgeable people on this site. They have helped me in many different ways. i am very thankful for that help.

Klorinth I'm new to this to and was looking for info on squab. Any info you could give on your building would be helpful thanks.

Back in colonial times many people had dove coops designed so you could access the nest box from behind. They would tie the chick to a string and in a month, fresh meat. It was a welcome change from the salted meat they ate all winter. Don't sell yourself short, it's a tried and tested means of survival. Not such a bad idea after all eh.

Let me know how you make out with that. Have you ever eaten squab?

I love pigeons they are good to eat almost better than chicken, and my wife even likes them.I just got some pigeons again, and cant wait for some good eating.I was looking for a large breed bird but they seem to hard to find so i found some hey breed birds they are a cross of runts and Russian tumblers. They are about 2 lb.I wanted kings or giant Runts but for now this will do.
