Do combs grow back? Do all hens have combs?

Thread Starter

We just recently purchased a flock of chickens about a month ago.  We now are the happy owners of 14 mixed hens (all about 1 year old).

We HAD one rooster that came with the purchase, the rooster is now gone (adopted).  We got rid of the rooster because he kept pecking at a few of the hens heads.  He pecked (picked on) a few of them and had severed thier comb and they were bleeding from their combs.

Now that he is gone there is peace in the coop........the girls have been cleaned of the blood and it looks like one of the hens comb is growing back, however the 4 others may have not had combs or they are permanently damaged as they are not growing back like the Leghorn's comb is growing back.

So my 2 questions are do combs grow back and do all hens have combs?

they can heal, but don't really grow back.  Maybe those hens had smaller combs?  Were they rose combs or some of the other really small combs naturally?

What type of hens are they?  My Silkie/Cochins girls hardly have a comb at all.  The OEGB girls have very tiny ones.  Yeah, they won't grow back but they will heal.  Maybe someone dubbed their combs before you bought them? hmm

What does dubbed mean? I have one small chick who never seems to have had a comb, but I have never seen signed of it being pecked away, blood or injuries. I just assumed she never grew one. Any insight?
