PHEW!! Haven't been on for awhile (crazy spring!) so it is fun to see so many "new" Ohioans!!!! welcome-byc.gif

I'm in Southern Morrow County (Hi again, Marengoite!!! Don't give up on me!! yippiechickie.gif)   and I am just starting out with my Silkie and Showgirl flock! I am hoping to have birds/hatching eggs available in the fall since I'm totally hooked on chicks...thank you for this support group...I also have 5 LF youngsters growing happily into layers - Faith (EE) Hope (EE) Charity (Brown Leghorn) Joy (PBR) Grace (BSL).  I just replied to an ad on CL for some Austrolorp and Buff Orp pullets so I hope to be adding more to the "working girls".  PLUS I'm crazy excited waiting for Sydneylou's current hatch to take place since I'm hopeful for a bunch of black Silkie chicks to make their new home in Cardington!!! YEAH!!!

Welcome to all and I love hearing about everyone's chicken kids!!

Lovin' Life to the FULLEST! I adore my little Silkies and Showgirls! 2 rescue swans, a tribe of guineas and numerous other rescued critters, including my Livestock Guardian, Tony Llama...YES! I live on a farm! Praising God daily!

Hey all you buckeyes.

I am from Ada.  Its near Lima.  I have black silkies, white silkies, new hampshire reds and golden buffs, and some fat lazy xrocks.  I will be changing my red/buffs over to buckeyes in a few weeks.  Gotta keep the breed alive.  I have only been raising chickens for a year but I am hooked.

Hello everyone!  We just moved to NE Ohio from St. Louis, so we're newbies to both chicken farming & to being Buckeyes.  So far so good, except I was told not to get used to these mild winters... uh oh!  Not looking forward to that th.gifWe just started out & can't wait to see how everything develops.  After a few mishaps & lots of training, we're down to 12 chickens (open doors, dogs chasing, etc.).

Here's what we have so far...

2 SLW

2 RIR

3 red link pullets

1 amber link pullet

2 tetra tint pullets

1 gold sebright bantam

1 AGB

Hoping next year to add some more decorative birds to the flock as well.  I'm dying for some silkies & polish!  We feed our dogs a primarily raw diet too, so we're thinking of beginning some meat chickens as well to grow for them.  At first we didn't think we could kill something we raised, but after having to do so with a few already, we realized it isn't so bad & would be a lot cheaper than going to the store all the time!  Any advice or suggestions where to find good stock up here is greatly appreciated.  I love having the mix of breeds, but would like to eventually get into a specialty breed as well once I get more experience.

Welcome to the Buckeye state. I am heading to Alton late this month. Anyone you want me to say hi to lol?

Good luck with your chickens and other animals.

From Coshocton,

Shawn

Jealous, we really need a trip that way!  Lots of friends there on the IL side since I went to school at SIUE.  Don't forget to make a stop at Fast Eddie's!

I looked at all the caged animals in the barn...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry."God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"God was silent for a moment, and then He spoke softly, "I have done something," he replied.  "I created you."

I go to County Line Ag in Harrod, Ohio for my feed. Like $15 or $16 for 50 pounds. They mix their own feed there too.  The only think is it costs $10 to start the mill.  So the more bulk you buy the cheaper it gets.  They can mix however you want.  Their number is 419-648-3277.  Hope this helps.

Fast Eddie's is iconic in the STL area!  The food is cheap & delicious & they have lots of drinks/beers with great prices too.  It's a hole in the wall without being a hole in the wall.  It's nearly always packed, especially on the weekends or when bands are there so depending on what time, it may be standing room only.  Still worth it!  We usually try to get there early so we have a place to site & then stay the whole night D.gif  It's got a totally unique atmosphere, or at least one I haven't found anywhere else.  It is 21+ all the time so if there are any kiddos, make sure you leave them at home.  Have a fun & safe trip!
