LOL! I was thinking something larger than a coon, too! The coons have been terrible this year. I just adopted a Great Pyrenees/Shepherd puppy to start out as a LGD for the flocks. Praise God that I haven't lost any chickens to predators, but I've killed plenty of coons and seen my share of coyotes. When a coyote loped thru my back yard in BROAD DAYLIGHT with me standing about 30 feet away, I decided to take the plunge with a LGD. Here's to hoping that this pup will grow to love and protect "her flock"!

Seriously, though, you need to establish your goals and then pick the breed. I wanted a dual purpose bird. Didn't need an egg-laying machine and was willing to wait more than 8 weeks for a broiler, so that was our breed of choice. If I were to be strictly an egg operation, I'd probably go with Golden Comet or Golden Buff (You can get GC's from Meyer and GB's from Eagle Nest just southeast of you near Bucyrus). But if you want chickens to scratch around the house, you have a nice list. I have two Barred rocks hens and a cockerel from Eagle nest and they're a bit smaller than my Buckeyes. My son has a project raising Silver Spangled Hamburgs and they're only 5 weeks old but ranging very well on their own. They stay separate from the bigger chickens for now, but I'd only recommend them for eye candy and lots of small white eggs.We got a dozen straight run from Meyer and have about half pullets and half cockerels. They're very hardy (haven't lost a chick yet) and very independent, probably a little TOO independent for their own good, but so far they've been fine. The culls from this bunch aren't going to be much in the way of roasting chickens, so I'll probably slow cook them in pairs for noodles or dumplings this winter. 

 

Keep them all at your place, blessedchick. We don't want them here in Marengo. We have a Golden retriever and her son who is crossed with a Lab. Between the two of them, I haven't had a problem with varmints. Now the neighbor's dog on the other hand...Lost all of our turkeys, all but one Golden comet, half our Barred Rocks and half our Buckeyes in two separate raids. I'd recommend a good LGD, but you have to be very firm with them, especially when strangers pull in the drive.

Same thing happen to me. One raccoon busted through the cage door and escaped. Then I went and got a huge cage from Medina Tractor supply and guess what, my friend tells me that "nothing gets killed in the property" so after catching a "huge" raccoon, and battling over if we should drown it in a tub  of water or release it somewhere ( which some say is legal and some say illegal), we released the Raccoon back in the back yard. So far raccoon did not kill any thing in our yard. They were coming up in the broad day light and my neighbor feeds these raccoon. She said she stopped it but I see here every day walking back feeding these raccoons.

 

Anyway, I told my friend that now we have to make a ethical judgment call. According to my friend that Raccoons were here before purchasing the property in 2003 ,but I just got into mandarin ducks and some Pin-tails. Also couples of mallards ( reared domestically and given to me by a local young man)  are outside ducks since you can not have mandarins and Pin-tails outside the cage   I also like these mallards since they follow us around the yard and play in the stream. . Well, we are perplexed what we should be doing with our raccoons and "Yes I know so far any one I met told me they killed them". We ran several businesses and I bought and sold real estates. Then I completed MBA/MPA, I also feel bad killing  these raccoons. The reason I mention my accomplishments since I am thinking what is wrong with our “philosophical l outlook “ and this ethical dilemma when everybody else are killing raccoons

hello everyone :) i'm in harrison county. wondering if anyone round here has any coturnix quail? about got my hutch done and antsy to get to findin some stock.

Just fyi if you dont kill them they will kill your birds. And it is illegal to release raccoons anywhere other than the property they were trapped on. Whats the use in trapping if you just release them a few hundred feet away.

About your coon ethical dilemma...just some food for thought. In Ohio most coons carry dystemper. When you see a coon out in the day and acting strange they are sick and most of the time it is dystemper not rabies. (Can't tell you how many calls I got about sick and odd acting coons when I worked for the Humane Society.) If you also have dogs or cats that go outside, they now can come into contact with this disease. And a sick coon can be unpredictable. (One chased my daughter down the road in broad daylight while she was running cross country.) If killing a coon protects my kids, dogs and livestock then I will and not loose sleep over it. Kill one for sport? no.

Hi, we do not own a gun. Thanks for your answer and as mentioned, we do not own a gun. I am also posting my newly built cage and addition that was necessary to host these mandarins and pin-tales. I am worried the entire thing has hardware cloth and the first part I wrapped the entire thing with the hardware cloth even under the plywood outside. But the new addition, I put in, I do not have any hardware cloth under the plywood but I went 8" deep and put hardware cloth all around and even under the door where 4X4 lays, I have hardware cloth wrapped.

In the old coop that was built last week has matching shingles with the house but the new one has the plastic roof very well secured. I wonder if raccoon will burst through the roof. I do not think these raccoon has either rabies or distempers(sP) since they do not act strange, mind their own business eating seeds but I did see couple of days back that they were looking toward the ducks. I am not sure waht to do.

Please tell me how to kill coons in a humane. way

 

PLease look at the construction in my next thread  and indicate if a huge raccoon ( that I do have around this house) wll bust through the roof.

I live in Chillicothe. I only have 4 barred rock pullets, golden seabright cockrel, and belgium d'uccle cockrel. Anyone interested in a belgium cockrel? He hates me. A man from Circleville says he wants him, but has been a no show three times.
