I ordered from Meyer in September and my chicks came in late October.  It was a great transaction and I am very happy with my girls.  I don't know of anything local except for someone who posts on Craigslist up in Johnstown listing http://columbus.craigslist.org/grd/3540422538.html  I've also heard that Tractor Supply has chicks in the Spring as does Granville Milling but I don't know about that for sure.  

 

I've heard not to order from the Johnstown Chicken Peddler. Birds live in awful conditions from what I hear. There are too many good breeders to waste time with peddlers.

HARDWARE CLOTH?

I suggest you look at Grainger. They have stores everywhere. Just look them up at Grainger.com. They have the best prices that I have found. Better than big box stores and better quality that others too.

I certainly hope not. My chickens would live in my wife's flower beds if she would let them. They LOVE dust bathing in it, and scratching around in it for bugs.

I LOVE the red crele look of the Rhodebars. But I'm still not willing to drop the kind of money Greenfire farm is asking for to get an order of chicks.

So are everyone's hens out today or cooped up? It's so cold (10*) I figured I would leave mine in but being a chicken beginner, I wondered if it was a good idea.

- Jersey girl now living in central OH with hubby, 6 kiddos, 2 lizards, 2 dogs, 1 cat & 15 pullets - 5 Partridge Rocks, 3 Black Australorps, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 Rhode Island Reds & 2 Easter Eggers

Mine wanted out so they are out. I wasn't sure I would have live chickens this morning with this cold snap we are having. When I got home from work last night I headed out to the coop to shut them in for the night. They were not in the coop. Not under the coop or in their run. Almost in a panic I checked the the igloo dog house I keep in the run to give them another place to hide and there they were. The doghouse was frozen to the ground and facing the fence so no way for me to get them out. So I threw a tarp over the whole thing and fastened it down to keep the cold air out and hoped for the best. The doghouse is insulated but no bedding cause I didn't want them laying eggs in it. Well they were fine this morning so they must have been smart enough to pick an insulated place to roost. big_smile.png

On another note, I fed them warm oatmeal this morning along with their regular feed and some scratch. Drama, my Golden Comet was eating the warm oatmeal then all a sudden took off like a shot for the coop. As soon as she was inside she started chattering as she headed for the nesting boxes. Reminded my of a little kid trying to make it to the bathroom in time. lol.png

LOL! That's so cute, kivi! I'm waiting for my 5 month old pullet to start laying -- she keeps going to check out the nesting box, but hasn't quite got it all figured out just yet :-)

 

And yeah, sometimes I think chickens are smarter than we give them credit for. That many feathered bodies in that small a space -- I bet they were snug and warm all night!
