Ugh! And, why do I want to sell these adorable sweet chicks that I've babied and loved to you???? So that something will get them because you don't want to take the trouble to build something predator proof? Even one of my best friends lost the chocolate runner duck I gave her because they don't cover their run or enclose it and many times they just leave them out all night because they are too tired to do it......so something came over the fence and killed him and their other duck. They have lost lots of chickens to predators. (I hope she's not reading this!)
But, I can't tell you how many times I hear that statement!
BTW, where is everyone??????
I am the same way! I know bad things happen but at least try to prevent it because it is possible. If you have chicks dead all the time or getting killed, why keep adding chicks and thinking they have a better chance? I blame it on ignorance or the fact that some people are just stupid.
If someone makes that statement to me. I am straight up with them, did you fix the problem or would you rather pay me for these and just kill them instead of waiting for something else to do it "again"? I had one person build their coop with plastic netting and they could not believe something tore through it and killed all of their chickens. WTH? Really? Most predators can tear through chicken wire and you thought plastic netting would work better?
Some people want to build a coop as cheaply as possible and I am all about being cheap (so I have heard) but when you pay for chickens, pay for feed, take the time to raise them, and then have them all killed and have to buy more chickens, how is that saving money?
I blame it on hormones and antibiotics in the food we are eating. That is better than saying, some folks are just idiots.
