Welsh Harlequin

You don't need to separate them, just get close and listen. The females quack, and the males make only a raspy sound.

I am having a very bad day. I found one of my original flock of Welsh Harlequin ducks with a prolapsed vent this morning. I am trying to get her to hold on till I can get her to the vet this afternoon. I will have to drive an hour to get to a vet that will treat a duck. I don't see the point in trying to push it back in myself, as it will probably just come back out. It need a couple of stitches to hold it there while it heals. I have promised her to a friend of mine, and if she dies I will have to give my friend another duck, so I will be out two from my laying flock. I don't want her to be in pain, but I really hope the vet can save her.
awwww so sorry. Hope the vet can help her.

Just heard from my daughter at the vet, and the news is not good. She will be bringing Joy home and I will have to put her down. The vet said it might be possible to save her, but the cost would be astronomical and she is not even a show quality duck. So, RIP Joy.

I'll have to do the deed this afternoon. Man.....

I'm so sorry, @LightningTFarm .

I know, I am so sad. I have had other ducks die, and of course I have butchered extra drakes, but she was one of the first ducks I got. She was my only golden, so she was kind of different and special. She was my loudest duck - we actually named her "Joy" after my mother, because she complained all the time just like my mom!! My mom didn't think it was too funny, but my daughter and I thought it was a hoot. I am not looking forward to having to dispatch her to the big duck pond in the sky, I can tell you, but I don't want her to suffer any more. Man, this just bites it.....

If only you could get it back in, and then put in a couple of stitches yourself...our local farm supply store has needles and sutures, so you might check yours if you are willing to go that route. I did my son's leg when he cut it open with a chainsaw. He refused to go to ER, so I didn't have much of a choice. I have a friend that's a paramedic who was able to look at his leg a few days afterwards, and he said the ER doc couldn't have stitched him up any better. But it was nerve wracking at the time, I can tell you. Anyway...just something to consider, since the vet said that it was possible that she could be saved.

Well, she died on the way home, so I didn't have to put her down myself. I caught it this morning, and I know she did not have this problem when I put them up last night. But, apparently she already had managed to get a massive infection. I feel so bad for her. I did my best by her, anyway.

It takes awhile for a massive infection to set in....

My two little ducklings are so adorable!! I've raised two other drakes in my time of having ducks, and every time the boys would cry and cry and always want you. This time it's the other way around, the female (willow) ways cries, and wants me. Idk why..... very excited to have them <3 can't wait to show them : )
