Welsh Harlequin

I got two as adults that are pretty people friendly. I have since rehomed the drake, but I still have the hen. She isn't a lap duck or anything, but she eats from my hand and is always the first one to great me when I go to their run. She gets all excited I am bringing treats and tries to fly. It is hilarious

What color eggs do WH lay? Seems like my girls should be laying but........

How can I tell the differnce between my duck eggs and chicken eggs?

What size bands can I use on WH ladies? I have 3 that are identical but I would like to band them so I can tell the difference. Short of using a zip tie (which might be the easiest) what size band do they need?

This is my first time with WHs, so I'm speaking as a true novice of the breed. But my girls lay white eggs. One of them started out laying HUGE double yolkers, but after a few weeks, they're normal size eggs now. I've noticed that my duck eggs are much harder to crack than my chicken eggs...almost like the membrane is thicker. Also, the white inside the egg is MUCH thicker than my chicken eggs. I don't know if these are normal characteristics, but it's what I'm observing so far.

Wifezilla, that drake you gave me (Tweak) is still my friendliest duck, and the hen I got from citychicker (same source) is also a sweetie. I just think it had to do with the way she raises her ducks, amazing because she has so many but she just must have a special touch. I am planning to find him a new home soon because it turns out he has a recessive gold gene and I am now planning to limit the ducklings I breed to just the silver phase. His recessive gold was probably to be expected since he came from a mixed flock. Except for producing a lot of gold duckletts he has been a real asset with his sweet nature.

Big Dreamer I don't think Welsh Harlequins are naturally as friendly as the Pekins and Muscovies you have, so I hope you won't be disappointed in them. To me they are about as friendly as runners, that is to say if you work with them a lot they will warm up, but never really want to be touched.

You will notice a definite difference in texture between chicken eggs and duck eggs, duck eggs are waxy looking.
I was told to use a size 9 band on my adult WH (Smith poultry), but I think the next size up might be a bit better for some of the larger ones.

You will also notice the duck eggs are pretty big compared to most chicken eggs.

DWD, I am glad you were able to give Tweak a good home. Hopeful someone will want him for stud. I did end up with quite a few silvers from his ducklings but also some VERY DARK golds. Dana helped me figure out it was Wendy throwing those colors so she isn't going to be bred next year. She lays a LOT of eggs though so she stays

I'll let you know what happens with our new man Cartman. He was from McMurry. We still have one of Tweak's sons. He is HUGE!!! We may just have him as the special guest of honor on Thanksgiving

Do the eggs look rougher? Are they a different shape? I only have 3 white egg layers in my flock. 2 White Leghorn hens who lay HUGE white eggs. And a single Andalusian who is not yet laying. I do have some leghorn crosses that I believe lay a lightly tinted egg....I got a few smaller white eggs last week that looked a little different than normal......just wondering if they may have been duck eggs.

Hmmmmmmm....maybe I will need to do the food coloring in the vent thing. Aw heck, they would wash it off in the pool. Sigh.

Thanksgiving . . ? Guest of honor . . . . ??? Noooooooooo!!!!!

Oh its so hard to know what to do with the extra drakes!!!
Could you post of pic of him?
I've got a lovely son of Tweak's I hope to also rehome as well. I'm matching him up with a daughter of that hen from City Chicker.
I also have a few drakes from my Bridgett who aren't as cool looking, probably just going to the Greeley swap next month.

well, I opened my duck house today, I clean it every second day, they are actually quite clean, cleaner then I have expected from all I've read.
Today, I found 4 eggs !!!!! there were no eggs two days ago, unless she had one buried in the nest box of hay. These are my first ever eggs !!!!!! from ducks anyways.
