Will you be able to tell the sex of the chicks when they hatch, also what will the chicks look like thanks cory

No, you cannot tell the sex when they hatch. They are not sex links with the rooster being a BR and then hen being the RIR. The hen must be the barred parent for a sex link.

i just did this BR roo x RIR hen earlier this year.  i also had a new hampshire, columbian rock hens in there too and a couple black sex linked hens...ALL the chicks were black with white tummies and white spots on the head.  there was no sex linking-need the barred rock to be a HEN for that to be a sex linked cross.  so all the chicks looked the same, black, white tummies and white spots of various sizes on the heads.

 

they are adults now, just laying the last couple of weeks, beautiful large and extra large brown eggs.  and they are BIG birds, good dual purpose birds.  we processed the cockerals at 16 weeks, and there was a respectable amount of meat.  the hens are all happily laying.  some of the hens are barred completely like purebred barred rock, while most are laced or irregularly barred, or almost blue in colour with barring.  quite a bit of variety all things considered, but they are all various shades of black/grey/blue and white/grey.

Hello! We also have some BR x RIR crosses. 2 roo and 2 hens. Has anyone bred these crosses to any pure or hybrid breeds? I would love to see photos. We are considering breeding those back to another RIR hen, black maran hen, white giant hen and the females to a leghorn rooster.
If anyone has photos of any of these "mutts", I would love to see them!

I am looking for barred rock roo x new hamoshire hen cross hatching eggs.

I know this is an older post but I am new to the forums. I just did my first hatching ever this last month. My rooster was a Barred Rock and the hens were Rhode Island Reds. I wanted to say thank you for the information posted here. I had the same question and started trolling the forums.

 

The poor dears were really big in the eggs. Only one hatched out on its own. The other 5 needed assistance after pipping the shell. They are all doing fine and a lively comical bunch. I'm adding a few photos of the chicks here. There face has a golden/to brownish with black streak coloring. I was wondering if the cross of the breeds always did that? I think it looks adorable, almost like a little mask.

 

      

   

These little ones are 3 weeks old now. This was taken a few days ago. Poor dear was pooped out, they did their chicken/duck run around the coop. It is so cute when they do their mad dashes for no reason flapping their wings. I have never seen a chick or chicken sleep like this though. I thought it interesting and wanted to share. She is a lighter color than the other. I had 3 of the color she is hatch and 3 of the color of the ones in the background hatch. I will be interested to find out if that shows male or female.

 

   

Well here are my three chicks as they are feathering out. I finally found names for them all as well.

All of the chicks are from a Barred Rock Rooster and a Rhode Island Red Hen. I did not expect such a difference in their coloring. It looks pretty neat.

 

This is 1st because this chick hatched first.
