Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

Hi everyone! I've been lurking since I inherited a half dozen RIR's from my mom last summer. Two weeks ago a raccoon (I think) wiped out my mini flock over the course of a week. Totally my fault, we were in the process of moving and the chickens were slated last to go. I think the lack of people & dog smells probably made them bold. Of course I'm totally addicted to having chickens, so I ordered 25 assorted chicks which are due July 9th. This will be my first time brooding any chicks and I'm super excited/nervous. I'll be building a new coop from scratch as well. (Our last coop was a Rubbermaid mower shed that was being thrown out. It worked great, but way too small for 25.)
Anyway, its nice to know there's an active community in SC. I don't know anyone who keeps chickens and other people seem to think I'm kind of nutty for raising chickens in 'burbia. (Except when I have a surplus of eggs, then I'm a freakin' genius!) We're not zoned R-anything, so technically I guess we're not supposed to have chickens. Where we live now is actually zones Industrial. Has anyone else living in a non-rural zone had a run in with authorities?
BTW, I'm in Greenville, close to Taylors.

5 EE's, 4 Australorps, 3 Cuckoo Marans, 3 Buff Minorcas, 2 Delawares, 1 SSH rooster, 1 mean SSH/CM chick, a 110-lb silver lab, a 35-lb muttzilla, one crazy wanna-be farmer (me), and one very understanding boyfriend.

I am in Greenville, too. Close to Cherrydale and Furman. I do most of my shopping in Taylor's and Greer. Most areas of Greenville are okay with chickens. Even the city allows them, with some limits. There are lots of chicken owners ere. I know a few in your area. Have fun with your babies! I have some 3week olds right now. They are so fun!
The original seven-3 Buff Orps, 2 SLW, and 1 Cuckoo Maran. Year two has found us with an additional 2 Splash Orps, 1 Black Orp, and hopefully, 1 Blue Orp and a Blue and a Black Copper Maran-still waiting to know for sure.I think our coop is full now!

OH Momd29---I'm so excited for you on your wonderful hatch!!!!!!
Just wanted to tell you alittle more info that I do after a hatch
I put pedilyte half and half with water in the waterer. Just to help the weaker ones recoop from the hard hatch. i usually do this for a week or so. Some people do, some don't and when I put them where they can be outdoors or get exposed to anything from the outdoors I mix a little DE in their chick feed. Just to keep parasites and cocci at bay. So far since I've been doing this I haven't had a problem with worms or other nasty parasites. I also put DE (food grade) in the mix of my adult chickens feed plus Crushed Red Pepper all natural dewormer. Also with the adult/chicks I use Apple Cider Vinegar in the water and also A-D-E vitamins just to help out!
And Today I read somewhere that Basil Leaves Help keep flies away from the coop...I'm GONNA Try This SOON!!!!! Oh and I grow mint and ecluptyus and I put those leaves in the nest boxes to help keep mites away. All of this is organic.
I know this sounds like a lot , but really it's not and it's good clean health for our Awesome Babies!!!!!
