If you have tried to get barnevelders at all you will find they are hard to find. Myself and other Barnevelder breeders see the need to improve egg color and keep the gene pool stong by helping each other and moving toward a bird that lays in good numbers with a dark egg. We would also like to see a defind double lace in these birds. Thanks to all who have had input of any kind lets work together to make this breed as great as we all know it can be. To all that my of seen the old thread dont worry that will not happen here all are welcome and any question will be considered a good one, and dont worry no chips on my shoulder.

Could you please post a pic of this breed. Do they do well in cold winters, hot summers? I am deciding on breeds to get this spring,

They are wonderful little birds but they still need work as a breed and if you looking for a bird that lays in great numbers or has very dark eggs you should consider the welsummers or marans if you have really cold winters you should consider a bird with a rose or short comb they tend to handel the winter better wyandottes or even americanas. if you have hot summers birds with combs are better because the expel heat through their combs to keep cool no matter what breed you use make sure you provide them with a source of shade. good luck with your search.

What is the average weight of a Barnevelder roo at about 1 yr to 18 months old?
I have one brother that isn't very big but has super personality and the other brother is very large, prettier imo and could care less about humans. He's not mean but he hasn't a personality at all. All he wants to do is fight other roos at the fence. I finally have put him in solitaire so his comb would heal.
He is more my favorite because he is so large and beautiful but is that really more correct?idunno
His brother may catch up but he really hasn't the mass that Big Barnie has. I'll keep them both for now but eventually I will need to get rid of one and bring in another roo or hatch one, to diversify.

Bantam Cochins are my love! Whites, Mille Fleur projects and black Mottled. Chickens, Guineas, Ducks and Meal Worms. www.westknollfarm.com
God Bless America! If you can't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them!

This is always a hard decision.  I guess I would go with the bigger guy, however I have to tell you I have a pen of "just because I like them" chickens.

Don't be to hasty in getting rid of the other rooster because you don't know yet if he is just a slow bloomer or something could happen to your other rooster.

I'm all for helping each other improve our birds...no matter what breeds are our personal favorites! smile  No matter how long we've been at it there are always good ideas to share.

I'm a Farmer/Rancher  Wife,Mom & Grandma  No Farms, No food.
If you want house chickens and ducks in diapers then this is the forum for you.
I've got 50+ years of poultry experience, but this 'poultry' forum isn't for me anymore.
If you're going to complain about farmers, don't do it with a full belly or a mouthful.
