Beautiful ducks and flowers. Not so beautiful bruises Do your ducks not bother the flowers??
Hi Ren2014. They really don't bother them much. They have their favorites in the yard like borage, chicory, raspberry, gogi berry, blue berry, grapes and my veggie beds which need protection. I buy lettuce seed in 1lb. bulk bags from eden brothers seed online when it goes on sale. For 19 dollars my yard this spring started to look like it was carpeted in lettuce. They still haven't eaten it all. When the weather gets hot it will all be toast though. My biggest problem with the ducks is not them nibbling. They knock over stiff stemmed plants like sun flowers, hollyhocks and oriental lilies, snapping the stem. You would think I had just lost a child, if you saw me holding up one of my mangeled, broken, about to bloom stargazers lilies. I'm starting to figure out the main duck trails in the garden and only plant flexible web traffic friendly plants on them. They also love noodling around in the soft amended soil around newly planted flowers. To the extent of pulling them out or leaving them high and dry in a empty pit.
Still, ducks are great in the flower garden. I used to have real issues with slugs, snails, pill bugs, cut worms, grubs... you name it. Not anymore. The poop doesn't burn, disappears right into the soil and the plants love it. I also reuse the poopy water from their swimming pools on the flowerbeds. I don't have real grass lawns, so any grass in my yard is a weed, luckily the ducks like eating it so my two biggest weeds, grass and dandilyons are primo duck chow. Plus they are fun gardening companions. Eggs and ducklings, nuff said.
