Want to buy laying hens near Charleston, SC

I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens.  I am just completing a Chicken Tractor for my wife and am now looking for 4 - 6 hens.  I'd like to find 2 Barred Rocks and a few of other breeds.

I live in Hollywood, SC and am willing to travel about an hour to pick up.

Has anyone been to the Claxton Auction in Ruffin?  I understand they auction livestock, but I don't know if they would have chickens.

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I am in Orangeburg and am also looking for laying hens. I have been wanting to go to the auction in Ruffin, but its such a long drive. I have seen a "Claxton" in the market bulletin with chicks for sale in Walterboro which is 6 miles from Ruffin. I would assume these are the same people. I would go if they have a selection but I just worry this is one of those places that you drive really far for no reason. Im going to keep watching this post hoping some one out there has been to it. Keep updating if you find somewhere in Charleston.

I have never been to that auction but my neighbor goes nearly every weekend.  He says there is not a whole lot of selection there but it has been getting bigger.  He did buy Muscovy ducks for $2 a peice a couple weeks ago.

Hey, thank you both for the input on the auction.  I am thinking about going this Sat. and will leave a post next week to tell you what I find.

Welcome to the Coop. I live in Summerville and work on James Islands and I have barred rocks in my flock.

During these challenging economic times, we (I) have to remember: Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

20 Barred Rocks, 5 Black Australorps, 13 Jersey Giants (BBS), 4 Rhode Island Reds

Yeah, I will be looking forward to your report Goshen.  I should have my first coop finished Saturday and will be looking to but my first hens.  My wife wants Barred Rock or Dominique if you know anyone looking to get rid of any.
Thanks.

I did purchase 2 Dominque hens from a member near Orangeburg, SC.  I'd still like to find 2 to 4 more hens under a year old.

As a follow up, I went to the Claxton Auction today.  It was a little disappointing.  They did auction off a number of chickens, but most of them seemed to be old hens and roosters.  I did learn there is another auction in Walterboro on the second and fourth Saturdays.  I may try to attend it next weekend.

Goshen.
