I think I'll try to find a "possible" home for him just in case... since I can't have a rooster.  Don't want to wait out the days of crowing while I look.  KWIM?  Hee hee.

Any takers for a possible home?? I am in Dutchess County, NY.

I'll let you all know how it turns out.

IMO, I would be suprised if it turns out to be a rooster. Yes, the comb and wattles are suspicious, but the body still says it's going to be a hen. I think this is a pullet getting ready to lay her first egg.

Please do keep us posted; I would really like to know if my guess is right or wrong.

I'm sorry to tell you, you may be hearing a crow very soon.  The shorter tail feathers, the thick legs, the huge comb and wattles.  You have a baby boy there.  15 weeks to to early for it to be a pullet about to lay.

I hope I'm proven wrong for your sake but that's a boy.

Don't you wish you could just flip them over and have the answer?!  Or maybe they could come with a pink egg or a blue egg!  I love the surprise, but I had 8 'surprises' recently.  I'll be hoping for eggs for you so you don't have to give up such a pretty bird!!!

Some of my girls' combs are getting pink and bigger than the others, (around 12 - 16 weeks old) but they are hen shaped.  I have a 12 and a 16 week old rooster for comparison though.  Some just mature faster than others.  But, I agree, this one seems to be an over-achieving hen or a roo.  She also seems like she has "bloomers" where the others don't.  She hopefully is just mature for her age.

I know I am just piping in but I have a 10 day old buff orp, and he has green eyes is that normal? he also has little bumps on his legs are these spurs and is that a definate sigh hes a boy?.

Thanks for writing My Pet Chicken! Our hatchery only includes an "extra" of the same sex and breed that you've already ordered, so it wouldn't be a rooster on purpose unless you'd already ordered one!

That said, sexing is never 100% accurate (it's an art, not a science), so it's perfectly possible that you did end up with a male despite our best efforts.

You're correct that redder, larger combs and wattles are a sign of being a rooster. You can't be 100% sure until you hear that first full-throttled crow, though...

At 15 almost 16 weeks old, with that body style, I say she's going to be your first layer in the whole bunch. My guess is that she'll start to lay within a month.

I guess it could be a roo, but I doubt it since I see no hackles or sattle feathers.

My leghorn girls have grown big red combs like that at about that age. They do mature a bit faster though I think. The Leghorn roo's got combs like that by 5-6 weeks old!

Sure hope they didn't make a sexing mistake! If that is a pullet ready to lay, that is a very early layer for a Buff Orp! That'd be great for you.
