Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

You are welcome. I am so very sorry to hear about what you and your birds are going through. Glad to hear that you will be getting what you need.

I think that the bleach will help. I agree with what you are doing. I would do the same thing. It can't hurt. The lime is a great idea. It sounds like you are doing everything that you can and that is great. I hope that your diligence, hard work and persistence pays off and they pull through it. I am sending good vibes you way. Please keep us posted. Please continue to post any questions that you may have. Good luck.

Oxine, though a bit pricey, is as effective as bleach and can be used without potential for problems. Runs should be as well drained/dry as possible - amending soil with sand and ag. lime (crushed limestone - not the hydrated lime) helps. Regular worming schedule for all your poultry, with a full spectrum wormer, is pretty much a given, at this point (knock down the intermediate vectors of the disease).

Best of luck!

Thank you so very much for the help! The meds are on their way now and the vinegar and pepper are working well. Everyone outside is in top notch condition again. The ones in the house are all still with me. Only one seems a little lethargic. I'm amazed at the improvement. I really appriceate the help you have given. I don't know what I would have done without this thread as I'm sure I would have lost more waiting for meds to get here. My husband is going to help me replace the soil in the runs again today. I realise even the most top notch flocks can become infected, but I work so hard at prevention. :( I can't seem to catch a break. I don't even allow people to walk out there for this very reason. Ugh.

So anyone going to be able to help me figure out dosage of these little ones when the meds get here? I do have a food scale for accurate weights.

Once again, TY!

I just know I would have lost more without the help or you and this thread!

Glad to hear that the meds are on the way. I'm glad that you pointed out that the most top notch flock AND top notch coops and runs can experience this as well. No one is exempt from this. Things happen. Although we do everything in our power to provide top notch care for our birds, we can still have something happen. I know that your birds will be ok.

And yes, we will be able to figure dosages for your birds. Just provide us with weights please.

Keep us posted.

People around here seem to believe "nothing" can happen to them. I know better. My first like birds introduced to our original flock gave us cocci, scaly leg, and gape worm. It is so much easier than people could imagine. Even the best prevention can't always protect. You are so right that it does need to be pointed out. I'm only greatfull this was caught early because it could have been worse.

I will deff get the weights when it gets here.

I'm sorry, may I ask another question? I'm wondering if I will be giving the tablets by mouth or mixed with water?

I am ordering the Fish Zole to have on hand when/if Blackhead strikes my new turkey poult. Because it is meant to dissolve, do I dissolve it in water or do I give the tab to her straight down her throat? I prefer to give her the tab as it decreases who else might get it in their water, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate when it is Fish Zole. THANKS!

You will want to follow the directions.
