I know the astrolorp holds the record, but I was thinking in terms of amount of eggs produced for the amount of feed consumed. So which ones are the best? I know my dad's RIR lay really well, but they also seem like hogs!

I know which ones are good as far as egg laying, but which ones are better at feed efficiency? Like which ones eat the least amount of food for the amount of eggs they lay? RIR are out, my dad has those, and they are complete hogs.

In George's pen I have the best for feed/eggs. The brahmas and white rocks are hogs - they aren't in George's pen, though.

The australorps aren't bad, My barred rock girl is a bit of a hog - she'll even try to steal Toby's bones out from beside him while he's out there chewing on them. The NH Reds aren't bad about food, but Miss Piggy (I think she's a red sexlink) is a bit more of a - well, piggy.
The drawback of the NH Reds is that they are red chickens - and although the two red hens I have are ok - for the most part, red chickens around here have been nasty things, and are gone with the wind.

The australorps love treats, but as for actual feed consumption, mine aren't that bad.

Miss Celie (barred rock), however, will climb your leg if it even looks like you have food in your hand

I think Leghorns are best in terms of eating. They are a little bit smaller than others, so they don't have to eat as much to maintain health.

According with the Marti Poultry catalog the Sil-Go-Links(brown egg layers) carry a few ounces less body weight than other sex link produce the same number of brown eggs, but eat less than other sex-link egg layers. You can expect 270 to 300 eggs a year.
