So I have ordered my first ever chicken coop (delivery in 6 weeks). I now have to figure out how to get a couple of chickens (6ish). I want good layers, that look different from each other and the kids want a few funny lookin ones. Someone told me to go to the flea market to buy them....but....after years of seeing stressed/unheathy puppies and kittens brought to my veterinary practice that have been purchased at "the flea market", I am uncomfortable with that option. I am concerned that the chickens won't be healthy or will be stressed. I am completely ignorant on how to aquire chickens! Buying bulk and selling the extras on Craig's list is not an undertaking I am willing to take on. Anyone have any insights on aquiring chickens in Asheville, NC? I am not in the market for another 6 weeks or so.
 
I just made a few phone calls.

I live in rural Georgia. The only local store who carries them is a locally owned hardware store, but the local farmer's feed and seed store will tell you about the local hardware store who carries them. Currently, they have 5 varieties: EE, RIR, BR, a brown leghorn, and another (I forget), plus one type of duck. They order from Ideal. They charge about .$40 more per chick than Ideal does. But, they are getting food and water and heat in the store, so the shipping losses and shipping shock are already dealt with. There are also two TSC's within 45 minutes of me who will also be selling chicks this spring; one just sold out three varieties; they must have had 500 chicks there last weekend, and will get more.
 
Check your local feed stores. There is an organic garden place in your area that I have been wanting to check out. We used to go to Asheville a lot before starting our hobby farm. Now we just don't have as much free time.
 
Check your local feed stores or TSC if they dont have what you want the locally owned stores might just order it for you in there next shipment.


If you want funny looking chickens get Silkies and as for layers there are so many types out there its unreal
 
Hey ~ are you willing to travel down the mountain? There's a guy in Morganton that gets chicks once a week, the hatcheries extras. He sells them at 1.25 each. I think they're straight run, though he did sell some sexed pullets last year. If you want his #, let me know.

Otherwise, Tractor Supply Co. should have chick days in the next month, I think. I know the one over by Biltore Mall got them last year (though they truly didn't know what they were talking about so do not trust them on breeds.

If you join the Asheville City Chickens yahoo group, there is contact info there for someone that sells chicks as well. I don't have it off hand, though.

There's also craigslist.

I know a man named Jim in Old Fort who has been selling chickens and other livestock for sixty years.

He is a really great guy and we have been buying from him for a very long time with zero problems.

Message me privately and I'll send you his number.

He even delivers sometimes ifits worth it.
