A very unpleasant pest

Yikes! I'm kinda concerned about snakes down here in Mississippi. I'm a first-timer, building my first coop. I don't know that I'll be able to afford a hot-wire. I think I'll have to put hardware cloth around the bottom foot of my run. What do you think? Any other suggestions to snake-proof my chickens?

Wow - good thing you had a hot wire around the bottom of your pen.

Hot wire is not expensive. Invest in a solar power source and then it won't cost you anything - a solar fencer is more expensive but doesn't require an electrical power source.

And no, there are no more pictures, because when he got free of the fence and was striking everything, I screamed like a little girl and hauled arse. lol

That looks like a cottonmouth to me,and being from Louisiana where they
are almost as common as a gator it may always be a problem. Its just another fact of life in the south.Snakes, snakes and more snakes.

Do you have any other pics of it? It doesn't look like a moccasin but rather a watersnake. What state are you in?

They look alike but inside the mouth is different.
Moccosins are a type of water snake only poisonous.
belly color is also different.

I used to live in Fla and when we moved here I thought the water snakes here were Moccosins but they are not.
