Norway RATS!!!

Thank you everyone, I so appreciate it!!!
I have heard that for every rat you see there are probably 5 more...so...with the number I saw the other night I was totally grossed and freaked out. And for you to have had 150...OMG. Norway Rats are NOT a good one to have around as I have heard they are horrible to get rid of...our other pesky friend that shows up in the spring are gophers..the little ones but nonetheless they are a major pain.

Our main concern is keeping our dogs and our chickens safe. We haven't poisoned due to our outside dogs...I would just die if something happened to them because of us putting poison out and I also heard that they can die if , YUCK, they eat a dead rat that was poisoned. one of our dogs has a nose for, well, stinky stuff. She LOVES anything stinky. She would be the one we worry about getting to a rat laying somewhere that we haven't noticed it.

I am going to check this method out tho and see what we can get figured out...and..I wonder how many eggs we have lost to these little creeps?!?!?

Thank you!!!

We use a rat poison called "Just one Bite" and it seems to do what it says. It comes in little packets that I shove into the little holes they crawl through.

You can also take about a 12" long piece of 2"PVC pipe, glue caps on both ends and drill about a 3/4" hole in each cap. Put the poison in there and the dogs, cats, chickens etc. can't get it but the rats get in and eat it just fine.

I learned this from our local pest exterminator. I have a couple of these laying around, I'll try to get a picture to post tomorrow. It's a really simple little device and it seems to work well.

Knock on wood, but I have not had a rat problem in years.

But I use the rat poison that comes in "brick" form.  You break off pieces and drop it down their hole. The last time I had rats, and in my opinion not a more disgusting creature living, this just eliminated them and have not had a problem since.

A Jack Russell Terrier is very effective as well.  /img/smilies/wink.png

That's what we used so far and the darn rat still is feeding on my chickens! We have lost about fifty chickens to our Norway rats!

I have dogs and a .22 we've put out poison and such but nothing seems to be working. :( I'm so sick of trying that I want to give up. Thankfully my husband won't let me! Last season we didn't have any of these problems! :(

We have either Norways or Wood rats here. The farm was pretty over run with them when we bought it. Grandpa used to kill the native blacksnakes that he would see. There hasn't been a snake killed on this property in 6 years now and between the improved population of blacksnakes and my dogs I seldom see a rat anymore.

Bonus because of Sneaky Snake a near 5 footer that hangs around in the barn my MIL will not go in there. I had caught her more than once slipping feed to a quarantine horse on a strict refeeding diet. She wouldn't listen to me so I made sure she saw him, nudged him out of in back of the old chest freezer I store grain in. She hasn't set foot in the barn since.
