Do my free range chickens need me to supplement their diet with grit? Many Thanks!

I think they get enough grit just by free-ranging...I don't use grit both my runs are dirt........

My 12 grown girls free range our acreage, and I don't feed grit. I do notice them in the driveway picking the gravel, and in the kid's sandpile, so I'm pretty sure they are getting the grit they need from the world around them.

For us we only supplement grit to the flocks when :
1) There is snow covering the ground
2) We have them penned for shows
3) They are residing in their winter coops
I've taken notice of the crop contents during evicerations and they appear to have more than enough without my help.

Rats! I just bought 50# for $8, and now it looks like I don't need it after all - well, better safe than sorry.

Grit is so pitifully cheap, there is no reason not to leave it laying around free choice. It will probably take them a couple years to go through the 50# bag if they are truly ranging.

I leave grit out all the time and mine free range. It's cheap enough, and simple to put some in a bowl and place in the coop. I've seen them take it plenty of times. They can have it if they want, or if would rather find their own that's ok too. I leave the choice up to them. And this way I know they are getting it. I don't have to wonder.
