Had to cull my crippled chick- Vinegar and Baking Soda Method

I had to do this today, and I thank you so much for your post. I could not do the scissors method, even if it is quick, and I thought that was my only option. This was neat, fast, and humane because the chick fell asleep and died within the minute. Thank you.

Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air so it is not absolutely necessary to have the lid on but i am sure that it is more effective it the lid is closed.

Carbon Dioxide is also the natural gas in the atmosphere that every green plant on this planet must have in order to live. CO2 is as important to the lives of you and your chickens as Oxygen is. Without CO2 all forms of food on this planet will cease to grow.

The smoke and fog that you see on stage during plays and concerts is CO2 in the form of hot or dry ice that has been dropped into a vat of water so that it will flash off faster generating a white cloud of CO2 gas. I have yet to hear of any audience member, one of the production crew, or an actor dying from CO2 poisoning. Besides keeping Eskimo Pies frozen at ball game, hot ice (Carbon Dioxide) is also used to put down the excess cockerels that hatcheries are unable to sell..

You normally breath in about 400 molecules of CO2 out of a total of 1,000,000 molecules of air with every breath of fresh mountain air that you take. When you go to the movies you are exposed to around 8,000 parts CO2 out of every 1,00,000 air molecules and despite machines to scrub the air, a sub-mariner is exposed to 12,000 parts of CO2 per million million parts of air. Carbon Dioxide is not the big danger some in this country make it out to be.

I had a chick who was barely standing on it's own. It was starving to death because it couldn't drink or eat properly. Vitamins did not work, so I decided it needed to be culled. I used the method described at the beginning of this thread because I thought it would be quick and painless for the chick. Well, it didn't work all THREE times I tried it. Yes, I followed the directions, yes, the bucket was air tight as an ice cream bucket can be, yes, I waited a long while to check on the chick. The chick was still barely chirping the last time, so I gave up and used a pair of scissors. Newsflash folks, death is not instant nor painless any way you do it. This was a painful experience for me and the chick and I hope others see this post before deciding to cull their chick this way.

I just did it today. 1 cup vinegar and about 2 tablespoons of baking soda. I cried my heart out, but I couldn't stand watching him suffer anymore. I fed him well and in a matter of seconds he was asleep. No chirping of pain, no sound, no mess. I believe I did the right thing.

Had to cull one of my my two week old chicks. I got it from the feed store and it was about two weeks. It went down on its legs for some reason and the joints were looking terrible. Even though it was still active and eating and drinking- Didn't want it to suffer having to flop around the rest of its life. Leg joints were already swelling and getting raw from crawling around. I grew up in the country and could have broken its neck or cut its head off , but my mother and my kids just couldn't deal with that- So what I did was modify a method I saw somebody else post on here. I put it in an ice cream bucket and put a margarine dish in beside it. I poured some baking soda in the margarine cup and then then poured about half a cup of white vinegar in also. I immediately closed the lid when it started bubbling. It only took a minute and he was gone. Now I know the little thing won't suffer any more. I read that this anethitizes them first and then they stopped breathing. This worked very well and seemed to be the most humane and less messy method . Just thought I would share that with you guys in case you have a sick chick. I just couldn't stand the thought of him going through life hopping around in the dirt and mud and being miserable.
Had 2 chicks born with wonky legs like you described. Make splints with pop cycle sticks and coban tape, put them in small juice glasses to take pressure off bones and joints. Took it off and did gentle physical therapy 3 times a day. They were just fine after 3-4 days. The bones and joints heal fast. Try this next time.
