Oh hun, sorry to hear about your husband having to go through all of that!!! Ohhhh morphine pump... I remember that... they are awfully nice 
I had to go in for emergency hystorectomy and cleaning of my insides due to Endometriosis (sp?) last year... oh goodness I did have smoke coming off that button 
Also, as for his smoking... ask his doctor if s/he will percribe the patch (they did for me in hospital, insurance had to pay since it was ordered)... it did wonders for me!!!!! And I too have asthema... so I know a little of what he is going through. I wish you and your whole family well!!!!
